FLYING TO BEIJING

 

It was a smooth flight from New Zealand to Hong Kong and after 20 years of travel I have the check in routine down to a TEE.

3.        Always book the very back of the plane as it is more likely to have  spare seats.

4.        Get to your seat but never unpack as you have to be ready to pounce on the row of 3 seats that still seem to be vacant. You have to be faster than everyone else, keep an eagle eye on those passengers who look as if they have the same idea as you!

5.        5 minutes before the plane doors close, leave your bag on your original seat and quickly go and sit in that row of 3.

Out I jumped into the 32 degree heat, just what my body needed after a NZ winter.

Another routine I have in a new city is to check in, drop my bags in my room and straight away take a walk around my new surroundings. This helps me adjust in an instant and the next day everything is familiar and I feel as if I have been here for weeks. It is also a good opportunity to ease the jetlag out of the legs.

The two graduating art students and their professor were indeed very talented, having lived in Hong Kong I have a real appreciation for Chinese art and especially the meaning behind the work.

On my walk back to the hotel I passed a massage studio, my legs in need of a massage I booked for 1 hour, the entrance to the studio respectable and upon paying I was lead out the back door, down an alley way, up some stairs to a very dodgy looking room where the therapist had to usher out two men who were sitting on the bed chatting!!!!!

  

My day started at 7am with a jog in Ritan Park, this is one of the oldest parks in Beijing and dates back to 1530 and was built as a temple to the Sun God and place of worship for the Chinese imperial court of the Qing ( 1644-1911) and Ming (1368-1644) dynasties.

In 1956 it was open to the public and now has an extensive garden and small lake of 206,200 sq metres which I ran around 5 times.

My 5 times around Ritan Park was so interesting, the park was packed full of people but yet there was such a harmonious energy. It occurred to me the Chinese are very hard workers but they also know how to balance their energy with a sense of tranquillity as I saw in the park on my run.

Zen Buddhism also has had an extensive following in Chinese history and influence and the daily habits of people as I saw while running around the Park. This way of life pursues harmony with nature and with others, simplicity and feeling of warmth and openness with all.

Every 100 metres I ran there was something different going on,  a group doing their Tai Chi, followed by another group doing a slow and thoughtful Chinese dance to music, to a group practicing their Kata, well it looked like a kata to me as I remember doing something very similar when I learnt Karate. And of course I saw Kung Fu moves which is as much of the culture as Chinese tea.

 

It transpired I was given false information and it is a two hour bus ride away and unfortunately today would have be my only chance to go as it is a full day there and back. Missed out this time, with the race only two days away I also have to conserve my energy.
